The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg

Do you want to break bad habits? Or do you want to develop a new habit, such as getting up earlier, exercising more, eating healthier, or reading more??

First of all, what are Habits?

To put it in simple terms, a habit is a regular tendency or learned behavior that we repeatedly practice that becomes reflexive over time. In other words, a habit is like a formula that our brain

immediately follows.

“The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg will help you understand how essential habits are. This is a good book if you want to have better control of your life, be equipped with the right strategies and techniques to create change and leave an impact on every aspect of your life.

Now why are Habits so powerful?

According to Charles, habits are so powerful because our brain is constantly looking for ways to save effort, or to put it another way, it will create a routine and gradually turn it into a habit over time.

The best way to create a compelling new habit is to combine a cue, a routine, and a reward in one system and then cultivate a craving that drives the loop. “Cue,” which causes your brain to switch to automatic mode. This can include your emotions, visual triggers, thoughts, and so on. Then there’s “Routine,” the most obvious element. This is a behavior that you want to modify or reinforce. And finally, “Rewards” such as treating yourself to your favorite restaurant, which convinces your brain whether or not this particular loop is important enough to remember in the future.

I’ve been a coach for a while now, and I know how difficult it is to break our bad habits, so the best way to encourage ourselves to change to our new behavior is to use the four-step framework by Charles Duhigg:

1.    Identify the routine

2.    Experiment with rewards

3.    Isolate the cue

4.    Have a plan
